Our latest Viewfinder takes us to Italy with Domenico Matera. We wanted to find out more about his approach to his work, where he takes inspiration from and the stories behind 5 of his all-time favourite photos.

What's your story?
I am a civil engineering student and self-taught visual artist. My journey into photography is deeply rooted in a lifelong passion for cinema and a strong admiration for contemporary masters like Stephen Shore and Gregory Halpern. I’ve built my practice through an obsession with light, everyday landscapes, and subtle, unscripted moments. Photography became my personal language to explore the world, a path that, purely through trial, instinct, and dedication, has unexpectedly led to my work being featured in international publications like the British Journal of Photography (1854) and VICE USA.
Tell us about 5 of your favourite images

Eye Nebula
Looking into the iris of a horse, I could glimpse the nebulae of the universe, sensing a profound interconnection between all living beings and the cosmos. I have always been fascinated by their eyes as cosmic portals- a pure reflection of their true nature. In that exact moment, drawn by a boundless flow of energy, I felt an overwhelming wave of euphoria and joy, while feeling infinitely small. That deep sensory connection shifted my perception entirely, allowing me to perceive the raw, incredible force inherent in their light.

Paint Horse
That afternoon, the light was warm and enveloping, and I was deeply struck by the shadows and colours on the horse’s coat. There was an intense sensory connection between the warmth of those colours and the soft saddle. I remember thinking at that moment: ‘It’s like sitting on a cloud.’

The Railway Station
An abandoned station: its sign, now faded and illegible, no longer bears names or destinations, but stands out against a warm horizon- suggesting that imagination flourishes precisely where certainty fades.

The Fluffy Field
Taken with the curiosity and simplicity of a child getting lost in the beauty of nature. The light is soft, time seems to have stood still, and I am entirely connected to the present moment.

The Candle Flower
I call it the ‘candle flower’ because the moment the camera flash hits it, it seems to ignite and come alive. At that exact instant, a drifting cloud passed right through the centre of the bloom, it felt like a direct sign from the universe.
What would your dream shoot location or subject be?
My absolute favourite subjects are horses, and my favourite locations are woods and untamed forests. There is something profoundly magnetic about horses- their raw energy, the way their coats catch the light, and their deep, almost cosmic presence. At the same time, woods offer an atmosphere of quiet mystery and introspection. Deep among the trees, light filters through the branches in unpredictable, magical ways, creating a cinematic and suspended reality.
What's your favourite thing to do that has nothing to do with photography?
When I’m not behind the lens, my absolute favourite things to do are diving deep into books, watching films, and listening to music. Cinema has always been a massive part of my world, and getting lost in a great movie, reading extensively, or letting music shape my thoughts are essential ways for me to disconnect and recharge.
