Swimming In NYC's Rivers

Swimming In NYC's Rivers

Swimming in the city’s rivers is one thing that New Yorkers are skeptical about. When asked if they would do it, most of them jumped to say no way. Why? Because — and I quote the video below — of the bodies, it’s filled with sh*t, and sewage overflow. What they don’t know is that in the early 1900’s nearly two million locals would use the floating baths and that today, +POOL — a group of four friends — together with Heineken are close to bringing it back. They already have the way to clean the water, they’re just missing a new set of laws that permits bathing again.     Conceived in 2010, +POOL started as a simple idea: instead of trying to clean the entire river, what if you started by just cleaning a small part of it? This also brought up a second question with a goal: what if you could change how New Yorkers see their rivers, just by giving them a chance to swim in them? And this is how +POOL — a floating plus-shaped pool in the inner harbour of the NYC waterfront, designed to filter the very river that it floats in through its walls — began. +POOL was the first capital project to launch through Kickstarter, raising over $40,000 in seven days. With the funds, they tested the first layer of filtration at Brooklyn Bridge Park in summer 2011. The research was used to approach city officials for the first time with the idea, which was incredibly well received.    In 2013, a second Kickstarter campaign was launched, raising more than $300,000 and funding a scaled version of +POOL’s filtration system in the Hudson River that was tested for 6 months in summer 2014. Many were involved in this process, and together they proved that the +POOL technology is possible and that it can filter the water from the river without using chemicals. Today, 7 years on, +POOL continue its efforts to bring this dream to reality, and now they have found a big partner: Heineken. As part of the company’s cities project, they have said that they will donate $100,000 to the project if +POOL can get 100,000 signatures from New Yorkers who say they will swim in the pool once the pool is finished.     Learn more, and sign the petition on their website at +POOL. Best of the Month - Vol. 5

Best of the Month - Vol. 5

The brightest and longest summer's day has passed, but there's still plenty of tropical heat and ice-cold mojitos to consume. Whilst the world news has its ups and downs, we're here to share the things that have made our month ten times better. So here are our favourite things, accounts, tracks and community photos. So grab an appropriate hot / cold beverage and enjoy!   Best of the Web Casey Neistat shares his 'First Day Of Summer' video, which captures his teenage fantasies and explores what summer is all about. Which, in his case involves sports cars, superyachts and helicopter rides. We're perfectly happy with poolside cocktails, though.    French fashion brand Pigalle teamed up with Parisian creative agency ILL-STUDIO & Nike to give their Rue de Duperreé basketball court site a vibrant makeover. The walls feature hot gradients and hues of fuchsia, dark blue, canary yellow and burnt orange.   Vox share this vibrantly fun video exploring the '80s design aesthetic. The 'Memphis Design' movement dominated the '80s with their crazy patterns and vibrant colors. Many designers and architects from all around the world contributed to the movement in order to escape from the strict rules of modernism.   Jordan Griska‘s sculpture 'Wreck' - a non-functional model of a Mercedes Benz S550, made entirely from reflective stainless steel. The piece, which is composed of nearly 12,000 individual parts, is meant to highlight both luxury and mortality from a removed perspective.   Ustwo Studios released the sequel to their incredibly beautiful, incredibly popular Monument Valley mobile game. The isometric MC Escher style draws you into its world with beautiful colour, and is the perfect train-journey accompaniment. You can download it here (iOS).    Tens Soundtrack Early summer is always fantastic for music new and old. We've upped this playlist to 30 tracks, share on Twitter if you're feeling it. Be sure to follow & save your favourites as we update this every month.   Who to Follow Here are some of our favourite accounts to follow on Instagram. If you know anybody that we should be following, let us know! Tens 2017: In The Press

Tens 2017: In The Press

With our 2017 now shipping and available to order from anywhere in the world, we wanted to take a look back on some of the love that was shared for our new campaign & collection. We’re thrilled to have received notable press, and can't thank you enough for the support that the community has shown Tens.

Crowdfunding Our New Collection

Crowdfunding Our New Collection

The eyewear industry has long been dominated by a handful of multi-billion dollar companies, making the landscape very difficult for smaller brands like Tens to thrive in. It is a fiercely competitive market, both online and offline. Whilst the story of Tens so far has been a success; the reality is that we still face the daily challenge of being up against the giants.  We’re launching our all-new 2017 collection as a pre-order on Kickstarter at a special discounted price. We work hard to constantly deliver a high-quality product, and this year we’ve been able to source improved materials across the range. This includes the finest-grade Mazzucchelli acetate, originating from the renewable resources of wood pulp and natural cotton fibres. Essentially, we are able to launch our finest product to date via Kickstarter, whilst keeping the price tag even further below that of the giants. We’ve worked to keep the cost to you, the backer, as low as we can without ever jeopardising quality. Kickstarter allows us to do this as we can accurately predict quantities when we place our order with the supplier. We’re passionate about the product experience that we’ve got to offer and we can’t wait to share it with you all. In addition, we’ll be giving a limited edition Tens t-shirt to the first 100 backers of our all-new collection. We really do hope that you like it and whether you’re a new backer of Tens or have been with us since the beginning, we’re hugely grateful for your support. Want to be notified as soon as we go live? Best of the Month - Vol. 1

Best of the Month - Vol. 1

At Tens, we're forever excited and inspired by all that's going on across our community and beyond. As a way of sharing more about what we're into (it isn't just sunglasses), we have curated our favourite news stories, songs, Instagram accounts and some of the best community photos we've come across. Enjoy, and look out for next month's!  Best of the Web NASA has discovered not one, but SEVEN similarly Earth-sized planets which all orbit a single star 40 lightyears away. Due to the range of temperatures that some of these have, there could potentially be life of some form in this system. To celebrate their discovery, NASA released this stunning retro poster advertising the incredibly far away planets as a family holiday destination.      Collaborators Mick Farrell & Cliff Haynes created a multi-point pinhole camera out of 32,000 drinking straws. Taking being disconnected from technology to a whole new level...     VSCO, one of our favourite photography communities and essential on-the-go editing app just released their new VSCO X membership package. They're offering their entire 100+ preset library, exclusive new film presets & tools and much more for around $2 per month.      Aerospace company SpaceX's Elon Musk has announced that they will be sending two yet-unnamed 'tourists' into space for a week-long loop around the moon and (hopefully) back. The two people, who know each other, have paid a "significant deposit" to travel, but will have to go through extreme fitness tests and training to prepare.     Construction is well underway at Dundee's Victoria & Albert design museum. The London outpost was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, and the V&A have shared a close look at some of the angular structures that will make up Scotland's first design museum. Check out the photos below, and watch an update video from the V&A here.      Vox take a look at how David Attenborough's 'Planet Earth' is filmed, and how they make unscripted animal footage look like a feature film. Explore the history of the camera technology used and learn how they make everything look so 'Hollywood'.    Tens Soundtrack We've launched a new Spotify playlist which you can follow and soak in during your morning coffee, gazing out of your window seat or simply unwinding at sunset. We will update this every month with our current favourites so be sure to save it out if you're digging it. Click the Spotify logo in the player to open in the app!   Best of Instagram Take a look at some of our favourite accounts we've come across on Instagram recently.
